Wild Flowers in Spring

The main castle car park is about 300 yards from the castle, in an area known as the Brays. There are large medieval earthworks here, and the area is covered with mature trees.

This is always a very attractive naturalistic area, but in Spring, the mounds are covered with bluebells, cow parsley, and other wild flowers.

FootbridgeThis shows the same path as shown in the picture above, a little further on, where it is crossed by a footbridge that joins the car park (on the left) to the visitors entrance (on the right).
BluebellsThe castle buildings can be seen in the background.

The bluebells only flower for a few weeks in early May.

Buttercups in the Great MereIn late May, the Great Mere, a former lake, is filled with golden buttercups.

Buttercups grow well in damp locations, so they like it here.
